Albanian President Bajram Begaj was this Monday in Konispol, where, after a series of activities, he also laid a wreath of flowers at the monumental cemetery “Roses of Chameria”, this gesture was misinterpreted by the Greek media.
“This memorial is dedicated to the victims of the Cham exodus during the years 1944-1945.” – writes the press office of President Begaj.
However, in Athens this gesture has found a greater space of interpretation, in an article of the newspaper “Prototema”, which calls this a new “challenge” from Tirana: the Albanian President at the event for the “genocide of the Chams”.
The newspaper sees this action as a mistake, adding that until now only a few party representatives have participated in these activities that cultivate anti-Hellenic nationalism in Albania, which are organized every year by (PDIU) and the “Patriotic Association of Chameria”.
The newspaper accuses the prime minister of using the Cham issue to respond to the developments in the Beleri case, where he writes:
“At a time when the tension in bilateral relations remains, despite the six-day permission given to Fredi Beleri to swear in the European Parliament, Tirana shows its humor by raising the issue of Chameria to the highest level.”
The article closes by recalling Prime Minister Rama’s meeting with the Albanian diaspora in Athens, which he calls a pre-election rally, and in this way Rama gets the votes of the Chams and at the same time finds a lever of pressure on Greece.
