Albanian athlete Luiza Gega secured another victory at the European Athletics Team Championship taking place in Poland.

The 34-year-old excelled in the 3,000-meter steeplechase race on Thursday, finishing in first place and setting a new record time of 9 minutes and 17 seconds.

Speaking to Euronews Albania’s “Kubi Sportiv” with Enriko Gabaj, Gega could not hide her excitement.

“I am happy and proud of what I represent,” said the athlete.

Gega said she is hopeful she will have the fastest time in all the leagues of this championship, having surpassed even her strongest competitor.

“I broke the championship record for this type of event, which means it is the fastest time in all leagues. Regardless of the fact that I am participating in the third league, the performance and result I achieve are better than all athletes who have ever participated in this championship. I truly believe that I will have the fastest time in all leagues in this championship because even my strongest competitor couldn’t achieve my time. I am truly happy today because it is said that medals are awarded based on time, whoever achieves the fastest time regardless of the league,” said Gega.

The Albanian athlete also mentioned that the European Federation has commented on the fact that she has achieved 11 victories, and if she wins two more races, she will be considered the most successful athlete participating in the European Championships of Athletics.

With Thursday’s victory, Gega equaled the records of Ivet Lalova-Collio from Bulgaria, who counts 11 victories and 2 second places in European competitions and is regarded as the most successful athlete in Europe.

A few days ago, Gega also won the 5,000-meter race.

Albania has been benefiting from consecutive medals in recent months, all in the possession of Gega, who, despite the difficulties and challenges, has managed to proudly raise the Albanian flag.
