Montenegro is the country that treats the elderly with the highest payments in the Western Balkans. At the end of 2023, the average pension there was 425 euros. In Albania, the average is 190 euros, significantly lower than our neighboring country.
Meanwhile, in other countries, pensions range from 120 in Kosovo to 390 euros in Serbia.
The pension scheme is similar in the countries of the region and is based on the years of work of individuals, but it is not the same, which also brings the gap in payments. Thus in Kosovo, the system has 4 categories, while in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the system is divided between communities.
Kosovo increased pensions this week by 20%, guaranteeing a payment of 120 euros for each individual who turns 65 and further de-escalation of the monthly amount up to 318 euros according to years of work. In our neighboring country, there are 304 thousand beneficiaries.
Serbia has also decided to increase pensions this year by 14% for 1.65 million beneficiaries, while Albania is drafting a reform, with which it promises dignified growth for the coming years.
