Hundreds of citizens have turned out to marches across Albania, protesting against the sexual abuse and harassment of women in the country.

With placards in their hands, protesters marched along the streets of Tirana on Sunday, demanding that the country take a tougher stand against sexual violence.

Protesters were spurred by a recent wave of sexual assaults that have taken place in many cities in Albania.

“The sexual abuse of a teenage girl in Albania is a further case in an escalation of sexual violence against women & girls. UN agencies call on citizens, to ‘Speak Out’ & call on authorities, to make sure perpetrators are brought to justice,” was written on UN Women’s post on Twitter, as a call for citizens during the day of the protest.
