According to ANSA, the mother of 23-year-old Mark Antony Samson — who fatally stabbed Ilaria Sula — has confessed in a police interview lasting over three hours that she played an “active” role in the aftermath of the crime.
“I helped him clean the house, to wipe away all that blood,” she admitted.
Nors Man Lapaz is now officially charged with aiding in the concealment of the body. In the arrest warrant, the investigating judge emphasized that Samson “acted coldly and without remorse,” stating that the young woman was “brutally attacked” by someone she “trusted.”
As the 23-year-old himself admitted shortly after his arrest, his mother was at home at the time of the assault, when he killed Albanian student Ilaria Sula — with whom he had had a brief romantic relationship — stabbing her at least three times.
This confession comes after mounting suspicions by investigators regarding the mother’s involvement. Besides factual evidence, data from her mobile phone confirmed her presence at the crime scene. Investigators also believed it would have been unlikely for Samson to have managed everything alone, as he initially claimed during his nearly five-hour-long questioning at Regina Coeli prison, where he remains in custody.
Samson explained that he had done everything within just over three hours. He attacked Ilaria around 11:00 a.m. after seeing a message from another boy on her phone. He stabbed her in the neck with a kitchen knife, causing severe bleeding.
It was then that the plan to remove all traces began, and at that point, the student’s mother stepped in. It remains unclear whether she also helped him place Ilaria’s body into a suitcase after wrapping it in a plastic cover and putting it on a trolley.
Mark reportedly dragged the suitcase with the 22-year-old’s body to his car around 2:00 p.m., then drove to the Poli area, where he discarded the trolley.
Currently, the conflicting accounts of mother and son are under review by prosecutors, who are charging Samson with premeditated murder. The father’s role also remains under investigation.
“The parents are devastated, in disbelief, and still in shock. They are terrified and sincerely apologize for everything that has happened,” said Paolo Foti, the lawyer representing the killer’s mother, as he left the police station.
