A recent report published by the International Labor Organization (ILO) states that the country has still a high level of informal employment with 56.7% of all workers employed under informal arrangements. This report was based on data gathered in 2019.
Out of the total number of workers, 63.9% belong to the agricultural sector 12.6% to the trade sector, 7.6% to construction, 4.2% to restaurants and hotels. In the industry sector 3.2% are informal workers, transport 3% and in the services sector 1.9%.
Professional activities, those of public administration, arts and entertainment are less exposed to informal employment.
Recent informal employment trends in Albania as regards gender indicate that citizens working in atypical forms are mostly men, excluding the agricultural sector.
By the end of 2019, INSTAT reported 1.2 million people employed, of whom only 782 thousand people were reported to pay insurance from the General Directorate of Taxes.
The labor force survey analyzed by the ILO shows that informal employment continues to be a worrying phenomenon for Albania, which may be further worsened by the COVID-19 crisis.
