Albania is not only shrinking the number of inhabitants, but also the number of families. The latest report of the Institute of Statistics shows that the number of Albanian families is rapidly declining.

According to the data in 2022, there were 758,973 families in the whole country, or 6,578 less than in 2021.

The compilers of the statistics have come to the conclusion that during the last two decades, the population of the country came down, but the family units were growing. This happened as the lifestyle changed the family structure during the transition. Before, during communism, there was more than one crown in a family, but this is not common now when children of adult age, married or not, are moved as separate families.

In 2018, there were about 3,100 more families than in 2017, while in 2019, family units fell by about 1,000. In 2020, the decrease was more than 2,600 families. In 2021, there were 3,400 fewer families and in 2022, the decrease doubled with over 6,600 families.

According to experts, this was the biggest drop since 2007 and one of the main factors is mass immigration.

Previous surveys by INSTAT have found that emigration in the last decade took on the characteristics of leaving family units.

The district of Tirana has decreased by 13.7%, or by 102 thousand people during 2011-2019, but 77 thousand people have emigrated grouped in families. The emigration survey has revealed that Tirana has the highest emigration of family units compared to other counties.

The data show that the phenomenon of emigration with families has deepened further during 2019-2022, as this is reflected in the reduction of family units in this period.
