International anti-drug operation prompts release of 38 arrest warrants that include high officials

38 arrest warrants have been issued by authorities in Albania, Montenegro, Italy and Spain, following an operation that is being conducted in collaboration with the State Police Department, SPAK (Special Prosecution Anti-Corruption) and the Italian Anti-Mafia group.

Authorities have reported that amongst those arrested are high officials like the Prosecutor of Vlora, Maksim Sota, (currently on house arrest) former police officer, Festim Lelaj, the Chief of the Sector Against Trafficking at the General Directory, currently on house arrest, and the director of the Office of Employment at the Municipality of Kavaja, Saimir Kurti.

Journalist, Marin Maçi, reports that the individuals involved are being accused of corruption, abuse of power, money laundering and international trafficking of considerable amounts of narcotics.

In addition, the orders for the confiscation of wealth stemming from dubious sources or other criminal ventures, are being put to action reaching amounts of millions of euros.

In the coming hours, Italian authorities are expected to hold a conference, where they will go more in-detail about this operation.
