In Italy, the agreement with the Albanian government to create refugee camps has divided public opinion and politics. Some of the parties in power see the pact as a good solution to deal with the large influx of immigrants from African countries.

But the opposition parties raise the alarm that the pact between Rama and Meloni is against EU laws, international agreements and human rights.

The Democratic Party, one of the main opposition forces in Italy, says the deal does not solve the immigration crisis, but is a strategic move by Meloni.

Even the 5 Star Movement says that the agreement is a Meloni’s farce and will not bring any change to the problem of immigrants. This political force says it will ask the European Commission for details on how this agreement respects human rights.

Ricardo Magi, secretary of the ‘Europa Plus Party’, says that this agreement is creating a prison in Albania similar to that of Guantanamo. According to Magi, this agreement creates a camp outside Italy without taking into account any international law and without the possibility of the camps being properly controlled. Also, according to him, Italy cannot act contrary to the laws of the European Union regarding foreign citizens.

Other opposition parties in Italy also say that the agreement is a violation of international human rights law.
