High temperatures and lack of rainfall have forced the Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) to purchase electricity on the international market.

In four auctions held over the past two weeks, KESH spent €14 million to meet domestic energy needs, with the electricity purchased at an average price of €95 per megawatt-hour.

These purchases mark the first imports after nearly three months without any energy buying activity, as the last procurement took place in mid-March. The total cost of imports in the first three months of the year was around €38 million. With the latest purchases, Albania’s electricity import bill for 2025 has reached approximately €52 million.

According to KESH data, a total of 408,000 MWh of electricity has been purchased so far this year, at an average price of €124/MWh.

The recurring need to import electricity at various times of the year highlights that Albania is still unable to fully meet domestic demand with energy produced from hydropower plants and solar installations.
