The spokesperson for KFOR in Kosovo, Colonel Andrea Gallieni has stated that several criminal groups were behind the violent protests that took place in Zvečan on May 29th.
On that day, Serbian protesters clashed with KFOR personnel, resulting in injuries on both sides.
During a press conference, Gallieni commented on the events that occurred in northern Kosovo since May 29th.
“It is very important for all parties to refrain from retaliatory actions. As these events have shown, everything can escalate to a high level of violence. Therefore, it is crucial for all parties to consider the consequences and risks of their actions.”
Gallieni stated that both sides need to take responsibility; one party should refrain from making decisions without considering the level of security, while the other should respond to the violent actions observed among the protesters.
Local Serbs have been continuing protests in the three municipalities in northern Kosovo, Zvečan, Zubin Potok, and Leposavić, even on June 9th.
They are regularly protesting against the entry of Albanian mayors into municipal buildings.
The KFOR official stated that since June 5th, over 500 NATO personnel have been deployed to Kosovo to reinforce the mission.
Gallieni mentioned that the forces are undergoing training and will be engaged within a few days.
He added that the reinforcements will be in Kosovo “as long as necessary”.
