Data of a security institution in Kosovo show that Serbia is reopening offices of its Ministry of Internal Affairs in the north of Kosovo, mostly inhabited by Serbs.

According to the data obtained by Radio Free Europe, the main headquarter of the Internal Affairs Ministry will be in Zvečan. However, Radio Free Europe has not been able to confirm this information on field or from Serbian institutions.

Serbia used to have its security structures in North Mitrovica, Zvečan, Zubin Potok and Leposavić until 2013. After the agreement reached in the EU intermediated dialogue, they were integrated within the institutions of Kosovo, mainly in the Police.

However, almost all members of the Police of Kosovo from the Serb community resigned last year, opposing the Government’s decision to re-register cars that circulate in the north with license-plates issued by Serbia.

Serbia supported the act and in exchange offered paid contracts to all the members, with the same payments they would get while working in the Police. Among other things, it is written in the contracts that they must work for the benefit of the Serbian community.

“We’ve done enough,” were the words of the then-chief of operations in the Kosovo Police for the northern region, Aleksandar Filipović, who was the first to take off his uniform.

The Serbian president rewarded this act by decorating Filipović with the Gold Medal for Courage – Miloš Obilić.
