During his word at the Prespa Forum in Ohrid, the PM of Kosovo, Albin Kurti reiterated that he isn’t in favor of the regional initiative known as the Balkans mini Schengen.
Kurti said that such initiatives could turn into an obstacle in the process of joining the European Union family, but also in the process of keeping adequate Transatlantic relations, because according to him, some countries of the Balkan Mini-Schengen support the Russian Federation instead of NATO.
“What we shouldn’t do, in relation to the EU, is run away from our responsibilities through actions that create confusion amongst us and give the possibility to other parties, to take advantage of them. This is exactly what the idea of Novi Sad about the mini-Schengen in the Balkans is,” said PM Kurit.
“It is an initiative that lacks vision for the region and as such, Kosovo refuses it strongly and encourages everyone to return to the EU agenda and transatlantic relations. Discontents toward the European Union shouldn’t be instrumentalized, by those countries that aren’t in favor of NATO, or those supporting the Russian Federation,” he added.
During his speech, Albin Kurti also expressed his disappointment with the decision of the European Union to not open negotiations for Albania and North Macedonia, saying that this is a discouraging message for the entire region.
“EU lacks unity, but it is our best hope and only alternative. This isn’t just because we don’t have another alternative, but because we belong to this region,” said Kurti.
