The agreement between the Kosovar and Serbian sides to open up their archives, including the ones on Kosovo’s KLA (Kosovo’s Liberation Army), has sparked reactions especially from the former members of the guerrilla group. They have accused Kurti of equating the victim with the aggressor while denying the existence of such archives in Kosovo.
In response to the backlash, PM Kurti came out with a statement declaring that Kosovo has nothing to hide from its past.
“We have our country’s archives, which include the ones during the war and all the testimonies and materials of KLA. We are very open and transparent, but we need to clear up the fates of the missing persons; we have another 1 630 disappeared citizens and this is why we need to open up the archives of Belgrade. From 1999 – onward we have been under international administration, we’ve had UNMIK, EULEX, the Hague Tribunal, so there can be no country, more transparent and more open in terms of its archives, than Kosovo. The country that really needs to open up its archives right now is Serbia,” – said the prime minister of Kosovo.
Kurti also noted that the opening up of archives should be a keyword during Kosovo’s participation in International Forums.
“It is of utter importance that we tell the truth and aim for what’s right, without taking into consideration Serbia’s willingness or eventual willingness to. We should protect our own interests and we should act in the name of our people that have gone missing and have been suffering for way too long,” – added Kurti.
