The Constitutional Court has decided to accept the request for the suspension of the law for medical students, which forced them to work for 5 years in hospitals within the country to be equipped with the diploma, or else they would have to pay the fee of full.

In the decision made public this Tuesday, it is said that the Constitutional Court is expected to consider the matter in its merits.

The law was sent for review to the court by a group of Democratic Party deputies and student representatives.

“The acceptance of the request for the suspension of the implementation of the law no. 60/2023 “On the special treatment of students who follow the integrated study program of the second cycle “General Medicine” in public institutions of higher education”, the court decision states.

The law, which was passed in the parliament in July, obliges every medical student to be employed for a period of 3 to 5 years in hospitals within Albania in order to obtain a diploma.

On the contrary, if students choose to go abroad, will have to pay a fee of 240 thousand new lek for each year of study.

For several weeks, medical students have boycotted classes and held several protests to oppose the law that puts them before two forced elections.

According to them, this law violates human freedoms and rights, and that’s why they appealed to the Constitutional Court.
