Fjona Mazreku is getting ready to enter fourth grade this year in one of Tirana’s public schools.
However, she has physically attended only her first school year due to the pandemic.
Not attending school has made it increasingly difficult for her to study, as well as creating a huge void in her learning. Although she is now entering fourth grade, Fjona tells us that there are many lessons from the previous years that she does not understand to this day.
‘Math has been quite challenging in particular’, she tells us.
Families are also in hardship. Fjona’s mother, Sonila, is now putting more effort than ever to help her daughter with her studies.
“I really can’t. There are some math exercises that I do not understand either”, says Sonila.
Top-grade pupils also admit that they have been afflicted by the same problem. Lenea Vehbiu, another fourth-grade student, recounts some of the difficulties encountered during online school.
“There are many exercises in math and Albanian that I haven’t understood, but I succeeded because my mom helped me”, says Lenea.
But for low-income families like Fiona’s, even securing an internet connection was challenging.
Alike Fjona and Lenea, there are countless other pupils suffering from the nebulous situation created in the past two years of online learning.
The question that arises now is whether pupils will have the chance to go over past lessons with their teaches in order to fill in the void.
