Requests for asylum from Albanian citizens in the EU countries have fallen during the first 2 months of 2023.
The data published by Eurostat, compared to the same period of last year, show 14% less applications, meaning 1675 requests for asylum in January and February.
France is still the most preferred country by Albanians, with 42% of applications there, because of the strong social support and practices.
Germany comes second with 23% of the total applications, even though other Albanian citizens try to approach it through work visas.
Contrary to the transition years, when Italy welcomed the vast majority of Albanian immigrants, it comes third according to the data.
In 2022, there were 13.200 asylum requests to one of the European Union countries, the highest level since 2020.
