The local elections in Albania marked a lower turnout than in previous elections.
Only 37.79% of Albanians chose to go to the ballot boxes on May 14 to elect the 61 new mayors who will lead in the next 4 years.
Youth have expressed low interest in voting.
Of the 122,545 voters who voted for the first time on May 14, according to data reported to the Central Election Commission, only 16,628 of them or 13.5% exercised their right to vote on May 14.
The CEC undertook several awareness campaigns for special categories of voters, among them for the first-time voters in the pre-election period, considering the engagement of youth in democratic processes as an important element in public decision-making.
According to the preliminary data from the CEC, only 1.25 million Albanians out of 3.65 million citizens with the right to vote exercised their right to vote on Sunday for local government elections, according to preliminary data from the CEC.
