At a press conference on Wednesday, the head of the delegation led by David McAllister in the European Parliament and the European Union Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, responded to questions regarding a case related to Belinda Balluku.
McAllister emphasized that his visit comes at an important moment for Albania’s EU integration. However, when asked about specific names and details, he stated:
“Of course this issue has been discussed, but I cannot comment on specific cases or individuals. I am aware of the matter, but it is an issue that involves not only legal aspects, but also a political dimension.”
EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, also addressed the issue:
“We have closely followed all government initiatives related to the rule of law. We are concerned that the 2016 Justice Reform should not be affected. We expect to be consulted regarding this initiative.”
He later commented again on the Balluku case:
“As I said, I do not wish to comment on the specific case, but the matter involving Ms. Balluku constitutes a critical test in the fight against corruption.”
