Meta’s Candidacy Confirmed, Freedom Party Approves Party President’s Decision

The President of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has decided to run on an open list in the city of Tirana for the parliamentary elections on May 11, 2025.

The decision was announced through a statement from the Freedom Party, which confirmed that the coalition they will be part of is the “Democratic Party – Alliance for a Greater Albania” (PD-ASHM), with the Democratic Party as the leading force.

“The leadership of the Freedom Party approved this Monday the decision of the Party President, Mr. Ilir Meta, to be a candidate for MP on the open list in the Tirana District, under the coalition ‘Democratic Party – Alliance for a Greater Albania’ in the parliamentary elections of May 11, 2025,” the Freedom Party’s statement read.

According to the announcement, this coalition will operate under the Democratic Party’s banner and will present a multi-member candidate list, which will be approved by Sali Berisha, the leader of the DP.

This coalition will also include long-time DP allies Fatmir Mediu, Agron Duka, Nard Ndoka, Vangjel Dule, and Shpëtim Idrizi, along with several other parties. The Democratic Party has allocated eight MP seats for its allies, of which the Freedom Party of Ilir Meta has secured four guaranteed positions.

According to sources, the secure list of the Freedom Party will include:

  • Ilir Meta
  • Tedi Blushi
  • Edmond Haxhinasto
  • Erisa Xhixho

Meanwhile, the Republican Party (PR) of Fatmir Mediu, the Union for Human Rights Party (PBDNJ) of Vangjel Dule, and the Justice, Integration, and Unity Party (PDIU) of Shpëtim Idrizi will each have one guaranteed MP seat in the coalition’s list.

Meta has declared that this coalition will bring about a political rotation in the country and contribute to a new program aimed at stopping Albania’s depopulation and improving living conditions for citizens.

In an audio message from pretrial detention, Meta stated that the coalition with the Democratic Party is historic and will lead to a major victory on May 11, overthrowing the current regime. He emphasized that the coalition’s priority is developing a sustainable economy based on traditional values such as patriotism and family principles.
