Today is the National day of the missing during the war in Kosovo.

Like today, on April 27, 1999, in the village of Mejë in the municipality of Gjakova, about 90 kilometers from Pristina, Serbian forces killed about 400 Albanians in one of the worst massacres during the war in Kosovo.

Most of the bodies of those killed were found in mass graves where they had been sent by Serbian forces to hide the traces of their atrocities.

But to this day some cemeteries in the village of Mejë continue to remain empty and many families still do not know anything about the fate of their family members. Every year, on April 27, a memorial gathering is held in this village in honor of Albanians killed and disappeared by Serbian forces.

Regarding this commemorative day, the Embassy of the United States of America in Kosovo has also reacted.

Through a post, the Embassy calls for the process of finding answers for the missing to be closed and for the family members to be given the answers they deserve.

“Today is the National Day of Missing Persons in Kosovo. After more than two decades, families still lack answers and closure to this process for their loved ones. Today, we stand with family members who still – decades later – do not know what happened to their missing loved ones. The priority should be to find the answers that predict the end of this process for the family members of the disappeared”, it is written in the post of the US Embassy on Facebook.
