The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, said that he will raise the concern regarding the non-respect of the Prespa Agreement by the new Macedonian Government, during the NATO summit that is being held in Washington.

Greece and its neighbor reached an agreement on the country’s name, with Skopje agreeing to change the country’s name from Macedonia to North Macedonia, and Athens giving up its veto on its neighbor’s NATO membership.

The new Macedonian president, Gordana Silanovska-Davkova, during her inauguration in May, referred to her country as Macedonia, not North Macedonia.

Taking part in the summit for the 75th anniversary of the founding of NATO, Kyriakos said that “I have serious concerns” regarding the use of the name by the new Macedonian Government led by VMRO DPMNE.

“This is an issue that I will raise,” Mitsotakis told the Council on Foreign Relations, saying the name issue was “simply not a negotiable issue.”

“It is not constructive. It does not help North Macedonia’s European path. It is an unnecessary complication at a time when we should find areas for cooperation”, he said.

Previously, Mitsotakis had threatened that Greece could jeopardize North Macedonia’s path to membership in the European Union.

The Greek leader, who had previously disagreed with the Prespa Agreement, which was reached by the previous left-wing Government, said that he has made it clear that this is an international agreement “and I respect it”.
