Strokes in younger ages have become a concerning phenomenon for doctors. Interviewed by Euronews Albania, cardiologist Agron Meshi blames lifestyle as a key factor in increasing cases.
“The stress, smoking, massive spread of diabetes, malnourishment and arterial hypertension are some of factors why cases are on the rise,” he explains.
Often times patients underestimate stroke signs and go to the hospital when it’s too late.
“Within 60 minutes would be the ideal time. Chest pain is the first sign, followed by numbness of the left or right arm and tightness in the throat. But one too many times, patients are late,” the doctor tells.
Strained physical activity in some cases could be fatal, which is why doctors recommend youngsters not to skip consultations with cardiologists before starting the gym.
“Even though one is young, it could be something genetical that they’re not aware of. In this case, they should do a simple consultation or an ECG, because it could be something they’re born with. When training, they could suffer a cardiac arrest,” the cardiologist says.
The best therapy to a healthy heart, according to doctors, is nonstop walking for 5 kilometers a day, at a fast pace.
