Muslims in Kosovo and Albania celebrate Eid al-Fitr today, a day that comes after the month of Ramadan, during which believers observe a fast that lasts from dawn to dusk and various other acts of worship and prayer that are meant to help them self-reflect and bring them closer to their Creator.

Other messages given during this month, based on teachings and traditions prescribed in Islamic religious texts are those of strengthening family and community ties, bettering relationships with those close to us as well as asking forgiveness and resolving past quarrels. In addition, other important rituals during Eid and Ramadan are various mandatory and voluntary acts of charity.

This year, however because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the month of Ramadan has been observed differently and the same goes for Eid. Several adjustments have been made to the prayer rituals because of the pandemic, where wearing a mask and respecting social distance in all mosques around the country has been mandatory.

In mosques around Kosovo, the usual ceremonies couldn’t take place, instead only the Eid prayers were observed.

In this special day, messages of tolerance, solidarity and those of showing care due to the pandemic, were shared by religious leaders and other members of the community.

The Imam of Kosovo, Naim Ternava stated that Eid al-Fitr, is a celebration which in and of itself revolves around devotion towards the Creator of the universe which believers attested to, during the entire month of Ramadan.

Ternava also made sure to appeal to all citizens to protect their health as well as the health of others, as the virus is still amongst us.
