The Tenth of May marks the National Day of the Dalmatian Pelican proclaimed 5 years ago in a sign of gratitude for the contribution given for the protection of this species, as well as raise citizens’ awareness of its importance.
A myriad of measures has been taken for the protection of this flagship species in Albania and especially in the Divjaka-Karavasta National Part, as well as raising public awareness on the importance of this important species.
Efforts for the preservation of this species began in 2000 bearing the name of Taulant Bino and other members from the Divjaka community, where many Dalmatian pelicans are found in the country.
In 2000, this bird colony was on the brink of extinction with only breeding pairs. A major turn took place in 2013, when the colony increased towards a positive trend, reaching 85 breeding pairs in 2020, the highest figure recorded in the past 40 years.
