Starting from today, citizens that are caught in public without a mask will receive a 20 euro fine. The measure includes as well owners of enterprises who may be slammed with fines over 2000 euros, for allowing entrance to customers who are not wearing the appropriate protective equipment.

Euronews Albania’s correspondent in the Republic of North Macedonia, Ferikan Iljazi, took it to the streets to see if the measures are being duly respected by citizens.

“I do have the mask with me but I haven’t put it on, yet. I think it is just a formality however the recommendations must be respected”, declared one of the citizens interviewed.

“Yes, I know. I am putting it on right now. Maybe it’s just a precautionary measure to protect ourselves and the others,” says another citizen.

“I believe the virus will be contained if everyone wears the mask. We hope the mask will help stop it”, said another citizen.

According to our correspondent, the majority of the citizens were wearing masks, however there were many others who were not wearing the protective equipment and as soon as they’d see the camera they’d turn their back away.
