Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani has requested the aid of the United States to expedite Kosovo’s accession process into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This appeal was made during a meeting with U.S. Senator Jack Reed on Tuesday in Pristina.
On August 8, Osmani underscored that the US “holds no greater ally and friend in the region than the Republic of Kosovo”, describing the Kosovar population as among “the most pro-American in both Europe and the world”.
Following the discussions with Osmani, Senator Reed was also received by Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti, who “personally thanked him for ensuring the inclusion of Kosovo in the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act, which enables Kosovo to partake in U.S.-led military exercises that aim to enhance interoperability with NATO forces”.
In a press release from the Prime Minister’s office, it was noted that “Senator Reed conveyed his appreciation for the warm reception. He highlighted Kosovo’s resolute decision and willingness to provide sanctuary for Afghan citizens, extending his gratitude. Among other matters, he acknowledged the significant role of the United States in supporting Kosovo in 1999 and recognized Kosovo’s advancements while expressing his support for positive outcomes.”
Osmani expressed her gratitude to Senator Reed, who presides over the Senate Armed Services Committee, for the unwavering U.S. support for the Kosovo Security Force (KSF). This specifically includes Kosovo’s participation in U.S. Military Training Assistance facilitated through the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act.
“Kosovo’s aspirations are centered on NATO membership and active engagement in the Partnership for Peace (PfP). Hence, the U.S. support in expediting this trajectory holds paramount importance. Our aspiration is for Kosovo to transition to PfP as a stepping stone to eventual NATO membership at the earliest opportunity,” voiced Osmani.
In terms of political and security developments, as highlighted in the official statement, President Osmani emphasized Kosovo’s initiatives to de-escalate tensions in its northern region. Additionally, she underlined “the destabilizing actions of Serbia and its collaborative efforts with Russia”.
Osmani also underscored that Kosovo’s constitutional framework safeguards the rights and liberties of all ethnic communities, thereby making Kosovo a multi-ethnic state. She stressed that these fundamental rights form the cornerstone of Kosovo’s societal principles and must remain inviolable.
