Different approaches on what the borders of Western Balkans states should be made it impossible for the leaders in the region to come forward with a joint statement at the Brdo-Brijuni Process.

The heads of state rejected making a declaration stating they are against changing the borders in the region.

The President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic refused to use the phrase “not changing the borders in the region” without including Serbia’s request, which would be to rephrase to “not changing the borders recognized by the United Nations”.

Vucic insisted that Kosovo “is a part of Serbia” and that its declaration of independence “violated principles against border changes”.

But his stance was adamantly rejected by the President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani, as the phrase would imply “recognizing Kosovo within Serbian borders”.

“Allow me to say this with a loud and clear voice: The Republic of Kosovo is a sovereign and independent state. Nothing and nobody can change this reality. Dangerous border change adventures must be rejected by us all if we truly want peace and stability in our region”, President Osmani said.

After the summit, Slovenian President Borut Pahor said that the phrase demanded by Vucic to be included in the final declaration would imply that several states, including his own, would have to withdraw the recognition of Kosovo as an independent state.
