Rozafa Castle in the north Albanian city of Shkodra has recorded a high number of visitors during the first quarter of this year.
The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Shkodër has announced that over 15,000 tourists have visited during the first three months of 2024.
According to the institution, Rozafa is impressive for all those who take a piece of Albania with them.
Meanwhile, in March of this year alone, the castle was visited by 7,025 visitors. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the Rozafa Castle was visited by 2,336 more people.
Investments made in the castle have turned it into a tourist attraction, accessible to both domestic and foreign tourists. They also show interest in the museum, where objects belonging to Antiquity and the Middle Ages are exhibited, as well as the Roman mosaic from the 4th century AD discovered in ’78-’79 in the lower part of the city.
Local and foreign visitors also satisfy their curiosity about the legend of sacrifice, which is hidden under the castle’s foundations.
The Rozafa Castle is a historic monument. In the surrounding walls of the castle, which cover about nine hectares of land, the constructions of four periods are clearly distinguished: the Balsha (14th century), the Venetian rule (15th century), the Ottoman occupation (16th-17th centuries), and the Bushati (18th-19th centuries).
Built during the Illyrian kingdom, it is represented by a legend that tells of keeping a promise, the legendary “besa” (pledge of honor).
