Albanian authorities have conducted a significant anti-drug operation resulting in the arrest of 214 individuals, with 82 others currently being sought. On the same day, decisions were made to carry out inspections in 356 locations.

The Director of the State Police, Muhamet Rrumbullaku, shared that this operation targeted 23 criminal groups actively involved in distributing narcotics near schools, local establishments, and residential areas. The operation, codenamed “Temple” (Tempulli), led to the seizure of various narcotic substances, including cocaine, heroin, and cannabis sativa, alongside firearms and cold weapons. This crackdown spanned multiple Albanian cities, including Tirana, Durrës, Korça, Elbasan, and Vlora.

Albania’s Interior Minister Taulant Balla expressed deep concern over the escalating drug use among young people.

He highlighted that the age at which young individuals initiate narcotic use is decreasing, often beginning within school settings. Additionally, the use of synthetic drugs is on the rise. To address this worrisome trend, Minister Balla announced the implementation of a new security plan within schools at the start of the upcoming school year.

Balla reaffirmed the Ministry of Interior’s unwavering commitment to combat this issue relentlessly.

He urged for a collaborative effort, emphasizing the need for a broad alliance involving various institutions, schools, families, and civil society to prevent drug use.

Furthermore, Minister Balla revealed that proposals to amend the Penal Code, doubling penalties for crimes committed within school safety perimeters, will soon be put forward. These changes aim to enhance deterrence against criminal activities associated with drug use near educational institutions.
