The Democratic Party of Kosovo has voiced its concern over the rising energy prices and accused the government of negligence for not taking any measures to face the crisis.
Kosovo’s largest opposition party released a press statement bringing attention to the spike in the energy prices that Europe has been facing recently.
“This international crisis threatens a steady energy supply and unbearable costs for citizens and businesses, which hampers economic stability, the wellbeing of citizens and national security itself”, a press statement read.
In addition, PDK adds that Kosovo does not have the capacity to generate a sufficient amount of energy to sustain itself during the peak of consumption and consequently is dependent on neighboring countries.
“The government should have made plans ahead for the winter season by securing contracts for the purchase of energy during the time when the price in the stock market was still low. Unlike the government of Kosovo, many other governments mobilized and are taking measures to face the grave consequences of diminishing energy sources and an unprecedented rise in prices in such a short time span”, the Democrats warned.
In addition, they warn that this is putting local businesses in peril, which have yet to recover from the pandemic.
PDK called on the government of Prime Minister Albin Kurti to take immediate measures by securing contracts at a reasonable price in the months to come so that the country does not suffer from energy shortages in the winter.
