Pensioners in Elbasan consider it a luxury to heat their homes using electricity, gas, or even wood, as these options are too expensive for them. Their limited incomes mean that most of them can only manage to heat themselves using blankets, as the increase in pensions has not had a positive impact on them.

In these cold winter days, heating is essential. However, elderly people in Elbasan suffer in this regard, as the options for heating through electricity, gas, or even wood are unaffordable for many in this category. So, how do pensioners in Elbasan manage to heat their homes?

“We are heating with a heater, and we put a blanket over us to warm our feet. Can you afford it? What can we afford? I get 100,000 lek in pension every month. Does your pension cover medicine, heating, and food? What can 100,000 lek do? I also buy medication for my prostate, and they are very expensive.”

“I use an air conditioner, but it doesn’t add up, the budget doesn’t work. The energy is extremely expensive, especially for our country. Pensions are low, there’s no work, especially for the elderly, so we have to gather with blankets.”

“We heat with gas and electricity, with the air conditioner. In the absence of electricity, sometimes we use gas. It’s a bit cleaner compared to wood, no smoke or dust, and since we are pensioners, maybe we face some difficulties, but this has been the best solution.”

“With firewood, 60,000 lek worth. We’ll save on one side and buy more when we need it.”

The elderly emphasize that pension indexing does not even cover the high cost of firewood, not to mention other essential products needed to make it through the month.
