Beginning in January next year, pensions in Albania will increase. Urban pensioners will receive an additional 1,800 lek per month, while those in rural areas will receive about 1,000 lek more.
From January 2026 through December 2029, pensions will increase every month. This new and previously unseen scheme aims to fulfill the Socialist Party’s commitment to raise the minimum pension nationwide to 20,000 lek and the average urban pension to 40,000 lek.
But what does this mean in practice for a pensioner who currently receives 27,000 lek per month?
By 2029, that individual will receive 40,000 lek per month. Likewise, for a pensioner in rural areas currently earning 11,000 lek, the monthly pension will rise to 18,000 lek after four years.
As for how these increases will be distributed:
- In 2026, the urban pension will rise by 1,800 lek,
- In 2027, it will increase by 3,600 lek,
- and in the following years, the growth rate will triple.
In addition to these planned raises, the government guarantees annual indexation, through which pensioners will benefit from a 3–4% yearly increase, in line with inflation.
The new scheme also aims to support disability and family pensions, which will follow the same gradual growth model until the end of the government’s current mandate.
Currently, around 730,000 individuals receive social insurance pensions in Albania, with the number of beneficiaries increasing by roughly 15,000 pensioners each year.
