One of the Socialist Party’s elected members of Parliament, at the same time the party’s chair in Fier, denounced on Euronews Albania that the underworld is profiting from public tenders in his county.

Ties between notorious criminal figures and officials, funding or the connection between these subjects and criminal gangs, as well as intimidations against other competition, are the three methods listed by Petro Koçi on how crime is encroaching upon public funds.

He emphasized that the construction industry is serving to disguise fortunes acquired from the sale of narcotics into legitimate wealth.

“My reaction is naturally at the local level, for the county of Fier. As it is known, the underworld of Fier has consolidated throughout yeares. Its prominence, or its criminal structure, has grown to become more sophisticated. Once, they used to have direct alliances with politics, by being in electoral commissions, particularly in the 90s with the Democratic Party. Later on, they became less politically biased, but have crossed to another side, legalizing businesses that generate profits, such as the construction industry that they use to legitimate the money of narcotraffickers”, said Koçi.

The MP-elect did not mention any specific names, but emphasized that it is known which “subjects are tied to individuals of the criminal world that are profiting from public tenders”.

In addition, Koçi highlighted that “the leading role of SPAK has started to affect public opinion” by injecting a dose of optimism.
