Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti met with the German Federal Government Special Representative for the Western Balkans Manuel Sarrazin, with whom he discussed the situation in the north of Kosovo, following clashes between local Serbs and the Kosovo Police.

According to a Government declaration, Kurti emphasized the need to respect the results of democratic elections.

“Mayors entering their offices and offering basic services to the citizens is something normal,” Kurti is cited to have told Sarrazin.

The German official also met with President Vjosa Osmani, regarding the latest developments in the north.

Osmani reiterated to Sarrazin that the criminal actions in the north, orchestrated by illegal structures with the support of Belgrade, aim to deny newly elected mayors from exercising their duties according to the law and constitution, and instrumentalizing the local Serb population to create an institutional vacuum, a general climate of fear and uncertainty.

Osmani also emphasized the importance of supporting international allies and the continuous coordination with them in efforts of providing lasting peace, security and stability.

Kosovo’s head of state reiterated that the actions of the Kosovo Police against Vučić’s illegal structures and criminal groups are legitimate, in fulfillment of their constitutional duties and in defense of all citizens, without distinction.

Despite efforts to destabilize the country, Kosovo has taken actions in recent months to improve the situation after the resignation of the mayors of the northern municipalities in November last year, and the democratic and legal processes have continued in accordance with the law and Constitution, Osmani told Sarrazin.

The latter previously condemned Kosovo’s decision to force access to municipal buildings in the north and the violent reactions to it by the Police.
