1.403 citizens filed complaints in 2020, against police officers conducting various acts of abuse and violations.
According to a report of the Agency for Services on Internal Issues and Complaints, the majority of denouncements were filed in the capital of Tirana, followed by Vlora, Durres, Shkoder, Korca and Fier.
Citizens complained the most about lack of action – the police not taking any measures after pressed charges or calls for help.
A good part of the complaints that were registered dealt with misconduct or a lack of communication on the side of the police, as well as unfair custody.
In regards to the pandemic, 103 citizens complained about unfair fines as a result of claims that anti-COVID measures weren’t followed.
During the lockdown, there was a growing tendency of cases of corruption amongst police officers issuing authorizations and permits.
In 2020, large protests took place in our country, gathering against police violence after the murder of Klodian Rasha by a member of the police. Investigations showed that policeman, Nevaldo Hajdaraj, shot and killed the 25-year-old because he has broken the curfew. Hajdaraj was convicted for murder.
