The raised influx of cars during the tourist season in several cities around Albania this weekend has incited authorities to raise patrols and random roadside checkpoints in order to prevent possible life-threatening accidents.

As was announced on Sunday night, the police fined 256 car drivers in only a few evening hours, for wrong overtaking while also temporarily suspended the licenses of 43 others, for breaking the speed limit or driving under the influence.

The crossing of thousands of citizens from Kosovo into Albania and vice-versa, especially toward tourist destinations like Durres or the Southern Riviera, were the cause for major and congested traffic, especially on the entry-points of the capital of Tirana and on the highway linking both countries known as ‘Nation’s Road’.

In order to prevent any possible danger and traffic congestion, the police stated that extra personnel was dedicated at the entrances of main cities, like Tirana, Elbasan and Durres.

The police appealed to citizens to show greater care in complying to the Road Safety Code, to avoid creating long lines and traffic, to remain calm while driving their vehicles and to not wrongfully overtake with the aim of crossing the lanes.

With the added circulation during the summer months, the number of accidents unfortunately also goes up because of violations especially in major roads like the road of Fushe-Kruje-Laç or Laç-Milot.

“[…] our traffic task force is constantly monitoring your behavior on the road,” – concluded the police notice.
