With the goal of improving road safety, the Traffic Police has increased random checkpoints by using vehicles that don’t display the police logo, drones, cameras, and other photographic devices to monitor possible violations.
As was the case, controls didn’t end up being useless. 68 citizens were arrested, 33 of whom were driving without a license whereas 35 others were driving under the influence.
Meanwhile, driving your vehicle under the influence of alcohol has been the cause for suspending the license of 84 individuals. High speed is another element, which becomes the cause for further penalization during the frequent random checkpoints conducted by the Traffic Police. A total of 398 driving licenses have been suspended because of this reason alone.
Apart from driving under the influence and over the limit, Albanian motorists have been penalized for the following reasons:
Wrong overpassing – 2458
Use of cellphone while driving – 1444
Not wearing a seatbelt while driving – 590
Not using a helmet while riding a motorbike – 512
The Traffic Police appeals to drivers to respect the rules and regulations the Road Code, as this increase in checkpoints comes as a result of the high number of road accidents that have been reported recently.
According to statistics published by INSTAT, in the first 4 months of 2021, the number of roadside accidents has increased by 35.6%, compared to the same period last year. Even when we do a cross-comparison regarding the victims that result from these accidents, this year compared to the previous one, 21 more victims have been registered.
In May, Parliament passed several amendments to the Road Code that foresee an increase in the value of fines for violations considered problematic and dangerous.
