President Ilir Meta has decreed Edi Rama as the new Prime Minister of Albania, paving the way to the formation of the new government.
A document posted on the official website of the Presidency, argues that the decree is in line with the Constitutional provision which stipulates that the party who wins the majority of seats in parliament after the elections takes over the executive.
A week ago, the Socialist Party sent a motion to the president to decree Edi Rama as the new prime minister.
Within ten days, Rama submitted his new ministerial cabinet to the Assembly. After getting the green light in parliament, the president has to decree the new government-to-be. Ironically, the Socialist parliamentary majority voted in favor of impeaching President Meta a few months ago.
The relation between President Meta and PM Rama became strained ahead of the parliamentary elections, as the head of state became one of the main critics of the government. However, the situation saw signs of improvement after the Socialists won the election, and secured a third consecutive term in office.
The Socialists established an inquiry committee tasked to investigate the actions of the president during the elections, accusing him of seriously violating the Constitution through gross interventions, leading to an eventual parliament voting to sack the president. The decision is now being reviewed by the Constitutional Court.
