The President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, vetoed the Electoral Code amendments adopted in parliament by the Socialist majority.
The president argued that he exercised his constitutional rights because the amendments were “unilateral”, “create unequal and discriminatory positions”, “undermine the basic principles of democracy and “severely damage the climate of cooperation between political forces”.
“I vetoed the law, as an invitation for reflection, to given another opportunity to the majority to respect the inclusive agreement, because without a doubt it will bear a critical responsibility, not only by setting the most dangerous precedent of these past 3 decades by one-sidedly changing the rules of the game but also by postponing the negotiation process”, said Meta during a press conference.
In regards to the Electoral Code amendments, the president said he sent a formal legal opinion request to the Venice Commission on Wednesday, October 21.
The leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, has also reached out to the Venice Commission with the same request.
The Electoral Code was amended on October 5 by the ruling majority who argued at the time that the intervention was necessary after the Constitutional changes made in July.
