President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani announced on Thursday that she has formally requested the Government of Kosovo to suspend the 10% customs tariff on goods imported from the United States, one day after former U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a similar tariff on imports from Kosovo.

Osmani said that suspending the tariff on American goods would be “an important step toward deepening economic ties with our closest ally.”

“This would also send a clear message: Kosovo is ready for stronger relations with the United States, with a clear vision that would make both our countries stronger, safer, and more prosperous,” she stated.

On Wednesday evening, President Trump announced a base tariff of 10% on imports from all countries, including Kosovo and other Western Balkan nations.

The move sparked widespread reactions. The American Chamber of Commerce in Kosovo (AmCham) and the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce urged the government to withdraw the 10% tariff on U.S. goods.

Arian Zeka, head of AmCham in Kosovo, told Radio Free Europe that the U.S. tariff could impact Kosovar exporters and reduce the competitive edge of Kosovo-made products in the U.S. market.

Meanwhile, Lulzim Rafuna, president of the Kosovo Chamber of Commerce, warned that the tariffs could lead to increased costs for Kosovar products exported to the U.S., which may result in a decline in demand.
