President Bajram Begaj’s decree on holding elections in the Municipality of Tirana has sparked debate between the opposition and the majority in the Committee on Legal Affairs.

Democratic MP Oerd Bylykbashi declared that the President should step down from office after this action.

The Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee, Ulsi Manja, asked Bylykbashi not to stray from the agenda. Nevertheless, the opposition MP continued his speech, claiming that Prime Minister Rama had influenced the President’s decree.

Meanwhile, the Legal Affairs Committee opened vacancies for five positions in the Regulatory Commission (2 from the Democratic Party and 3 from the Socialist Party), one of the three pillars of the Central Election Commission, as their mandates expire on October 5.

A vacancy was also announced for the replacement of Lealba Pelinku, the deputy commissioner nominated by the Democratic Party. The current members of the Regulatory Commission will continue their duties beyond October 5 until the election of new members.

Candidates for the Complaints and Sanctions Commission (KAS) have 20 days to submit their application documents.
