The pro-Russian Democratic Front, with absolute power in Zeta, the newest municipality in Montenegro, decided approving a declaration, in which they consider Kosovo’s independence to be worthless.
Montenegro recognized Kosovo as an independent country in 2008, when the Democratic Party of Socialists were in power. Led by Milo Đukanović, they lost the elections to the pro-Serbian and pro-Russian Democratic Front, the Democrats and the URA Movement in 2020.
Lately Đukanović also suffered a loss in the presidential elections and will have to officially hand over the post to the newly elected president, Jakov Milatović, who declared that there will be no withdrawal of recognition of Kosovo.
Zeta’s declaration on annulling the recognition decision, will not have a legal effect, nor can it be a legally binding act. However, officials from the Democratic Front say that it is only logical to approve the declaration, because it serves as a reaction against the support that the Montenegrin diplomacy has given Kosovo in the Council of Europe.
“It’s a symbolic decision, but it shows what the majority of the people think about the issue,” said Milun Zogović, representative of the party.
The Assembly of Montenegro questioned Prime Minister Dritan Abazović, who also serves as a coordinator of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
He said that Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe is in the interest of the regional stability.
