Fatos Nano entered politics during Albania’s transition from communism to democracy.
He was the founder of the Socialist Party of Albania and led the political force for 14 years.
As Prime Minister, Nano served three separate terms.
His shortest tenure came in 1991, when he led the government for only three months.
He returned to office again in 1997–1998, while his longest period in power was during his final term, leading the Socialist government from August 2002 until September 2005.
Fatos Nano was elected to Parliament five times:
• As MP for Tirana in 1991,
• For Kuçova in 1992,
• For Tepelena in 1997 and 2001,
• And for Saranda in 2005.
After losing the 2005 parliamentary elections, Nano resigned as chairman of the Socialist Party.
In 2007, he attempted to make a political comeback by running for president, but failed to secure the necessary support from his own party.
During his political career, Nano also faced imprisonment.
In 1993, he was arrested and convicted by the courts on charges of corruption and abuse of office.
Fatos Nano was born on September 16, 1952, in Tirana, and completed his secondary education at Sami Frashëri High School.
He graduated with a degree in economics and later specialized in political economy.
For several years, he worked in his field of study before entering politics.
Nano was married twice — first to Rexhina Fatolli, with whom he shared a 27-year marriage, and later, in 2001, to Xhoana Nano.
He had two children from his first marriage.
In later years, Fatos Nano withdrew from active political life, maintaining a low public profilewhile occasionally commenting on national issues.
