On August 10, a St. Petersburg court imposed a fine on Alexander Nevzorov, a well-known television journalist in Russia, for expressing what authorities deemed “extremist” views during an interview with Radio Free Europe’s Belarussian Service and on his YouTube channel. These statements related to Russia’s involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.

Nevzorov was fined 200 euros for making “disparaging comments about the president and the military” since his departure from Russia in March 2022.

In February 2023, a Moscow court sentenced Nevzorov in absentia to eight years in prison on charges of discrediting the Russian armed forces.

Through social media, Nevzorov accused the Russian military of deliberately targeting a maternity hospital in Mariupol and engaging in torture and the killing of civilians in Bucha.

Last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky granted Ukrainian citizenship to Nevzorov and his wife Lidia.

While once a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin until the 2012 elections, Nevzorov now opposes Russia’s actions in Ukraine and criticizes the Russian authorities.

Since the onset of the Ukrainian conflict, labeled by Russian officials as a “special military operation”, the Russian law enforcement agencies have intensified measures against dissenting voices.

Shortly after the conflict began, Putin enacted legislation to impose stringent penalties for disseminating “false information” about Russia’s war, effectively aiming to control the conflict’s narrative.

The act of spreading “false information” about the Russian military carries a potential punishment of up to 15 years of imprisonment.
