The Minister of Justice, Ulsi Manja, during his speech in parliament, discussed the new draft law on the protection of personal data, stressing the importance of awareness of this issue as a key element in improving the protection of individuals’ rights.

Manja announced that the sanctions for the violation of this law can reach up to 10 million euros, stressing that this draft law is one of the most important requirements of the European Union, included in the latest progress reports. He stated that this law aims to improve personal data protection standards, bringing them closer to the standards enjoyed by EU citizens.

“This is one of the most important bills. A constant request of the European Commission, also cited in progress reports. The improvement of fundamental rights is required by increasing the institutional capacity for human rights. I want to request the vote of each of you for the adoption of such a law that strengthens the protection of personal data of Albanian citizens by strengthening the standards regarding the protection of personal data, the same as those enjoyed by EU citizens. As for the implementation of the law, the capacities and powers of the commissioner will have to be increased if he is required to efficiently cope with the new responsibilities that will arise from the adoption of this law. Awareness is also required for the protection of personal data, which is still at low levels in public institutions and for the citizen. The draft law has gone 4 times for consideration in the services of the European Commission, it has been repeated that the sanctions that you call high should not be affected. The state has taken over sanctions that go up to 10 million euros”, said Minister Manja.
