Speaking at a meeting of the Socialist Party’s Parliamentary Group, Prime Minister Edi Rama presented several figures regarding investigations conducted by SPAK, stating that the institution has registered only 10 charges for corruption, 16 for abuse of office, and 15 for inequality in public tenders. Rama added that 85% of these cases belong to the first two governing mandates, which, according to him, indicates that corruption is being fought.
“It seems to me that it doesn’t make sense that the more corruption is fought, the more corruption there appears to be. Moreover, to give citizens a picture of reality: in SPAK’s records there are only 10 charges for corruption, 16 for abuse of office, and 15 for inequality in tenders. I am talking about charges, not convictions. What is important is that 85% of the cases belong to the first and second mandates. Simple logic shows that it is not that the longer we stay in government, the more corruption there is, but rather that the longer we are in government, the more corruption is being fought.”
The head of government also reminded SPAK about the investigations into the state crime of January 21, stressing that there is no urgency in filing charges while the four graves of the victims are still seeking justice.
“At the same time, many of the cases are linked to events of the past; beyond the paradox, I cannot leave unsaid that four victims’ graves are still seeking justice, yet there is no urgency to carry out unnecessary home searches or to file charges for reasons that anyone can understand, since we do not know the exact facts. Another fact is that Albania is ranked first in the region by the European Commission for the integrity of public procurement,” Rama said.
