PM Edi Rama stated this Wednesday that the decision to take in an unspecified number of Afghans feeling the Taliban, wasn’t simply in response to the request made by the United States.

According to him, this decision is mainly linked to our tradition of hospitality and our past as refugees.

In his post on Twitter, the prime minister also wrote that the arrival of Afghans in Albania is a moral duty, toward every citizen in need. Rama once again stressed out the fact that Albania is a member of NATO – something, which comes with duties and responsibilities.

Below is Rama’s full statement:

“So disturbing to read that Albania is sheltering the Afghanis only because the US asked us, as it is ludicrous to turn the back on them and blame the US only.We were all back there as NATO and these people were there for us, bcs they believed in the ideals both US&EU stand about.

Albania is doing it out of its responsiblity as a #NATO country and because of who we are.We may not be rich, but we owe it to our afghan friends in need, and we owe it to our tradition, to our own recent past as refugees, and also to the memory that our children will inherit.

Shying away from these basic values is shying away from the best of ourselves, of our history and from the ideals that the democratic world is supposed to promote not just in words, but also in deeds. #SaveAfghanLives #SaveAfganWomen,” wrote PM Rama, on his personal social media account.
