In Gjirokastër, the restoration of cultural monuments aims to expand the map of tourist attractions for visitors. Restoration specialists are currently working to restore the identity of the guard post located in Çajupi Field.
This structure, classified as a First Category Cultural Monument, carries special historical and architectural values and once served as a guard post overseeing the caravan route.
“It used to be a police post that controlled the caravan road. Throughout this area, where trade and the passage of caravans once took place, there were several others as well, but they no longer exist today. Because of the long passage of time and the extreme temperatures the building is exposed to in that area, this guard post urgently needed restoration,” said Ardis Duka, director of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Gjirokastër.
This monument is expected to become an additional tourist attraction for the area, enriching the offer for visitors who choose to explore the beauty and history of the Zagori Region.
“In this context, and for the development of tourism in that area, this site will become a tourist attraction. Combined with several bridges and churches found throughout the region, as well as other cultural heritage resources and natural values, it will add further appeal for tourism development across the entire region,” Duka added.
At the beginning of the spring tourist season, Gjirokastër aims to welcome an increased number of both domestic and international visitors.
