Violent unrest broke out on Tuesday morning at Corfu Prison, when a group of inmates set fire to mattresses, sparking tension in several sectors of the correctional facility.
Greek media report that the incident occurred in sectors E and Z of the prison, where groups of Albanian and Georgian inmates began a protest in response to recent cell inspections during which authorities had confiscated banned items, including mobile phones.
The fire caused by the burning mattresses was brought under control within minutes thanks to the swift intervention of the fire service. The island’s police chief and two negotiators arrived at the scene to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and measures have been taken to restore order and ensure safety within the prison.
